I am going to continue with a post of The Isle another Kim Ki Duk film. I also added a few interviews that do a better job than I at getting to the point of describing this new found directors work. My journey into his film making is not over..still need to see Fall,Spring, Winter, and Summer and Samaritan Girl. Ok back to the post I am doing now.

The Isle is another disturbing piece. Again fishermen flock to this place of floating houses to fish. There is also the small boat back and forth to each with the woman hostess/hooker bringing their needs. One man in particular in the "yellow" float is a former cop who killed his girlfriend in a fit of jealousy. Almost at once there is a connection between him and the hostess..be it an angry sex kinda thing. All the while he is contemplating suicide. Pointing a gun at his head numerous times and swallowing fishhooks as police approach. At this point the woman in the main house saves him from the police by putting him under the float and pretending to be cleaning it. After the police leave, the man is brought in like a fish with the hooks still in his throat. The caretaker of the floats removes all the hooks after placing a brace between his teeth. From this point they get along until a woman of his appears and has sex with him. He sees her looking at them having sex because she ogles from the trap door of the float. There is a really dark side to the owner of this paradise..and she ends up killing the woman on the scooter who is interested in the former cop. Previous to this she crept up on a customer who had sex with her and didn't pay (won't say what he was doing), but she pulled him into the water and stabbed him without him even seeing her.

Next, the ex-policeman wants to leave and she isn't having it. He tries to escape and she foils it ..again the angry sex..she sleeps and he finds his opportunity to make haste. The fishooks reappear as she uses them to rip apart her sexual organs. He hears the loud scream and turns back. This time it is he who takes out the hooks and helps her out.

Finally, all falls apart when another regular of the float village drops his Rolex into the water because of his whore. He calls local divers to search for the expensive watch and they find the scooter, the prostitute, and the prostitutes pimp underneath the purple float. All people that she has killed. As all this is happening the calculating owner slaps the motor on the float and the motor away from the scene with the cop. The last frame is the former cop naked in the water and heading to a marshy grass..from there the dead naked form of the float village owner appears. Very disturbing and leaves one to wonder about the former cop and his proclivities.

Very disturbing unless one is used to this type of genre. Found the use of conveying a story with little or no scripting intriguing again.DragonLordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02079119639929546435noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3622224148393321211.post-87957015103811587302010-12-13T07:46:00.000-08:002010-12-13T07:46:37.815-08:00Interview with Kim Ki-dukDragonLordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02079119639929546435noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3622224148393321211.post-39336488197080800332010-12-13T07:43:00.000-08:002010-12-13T07:43:34.361-08:00kim ki dukDragonLordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02079119639929546435noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3622224148393321211.post-37866488134548330052010-12-13T07:40:00.000-08:002010-12-13T07:40:50.125-08:00kim ki duk la isla TrailerDragonLordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02079119639929546435noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3622224148393321211.post-35327138779127456822010-12-13T06:04:00.000-08:002010-12-13T09:07:23.748-08:00The Bow -Kim Ki DukIn the film Bow,Korean director Kim Ki Duk does a magnificent job of creating a story with little to no speaking. This seems to be his style. I will also be reviewing another movie just after this called The Isle.

The story is about an old man who brought a six year old girl to his boat ten years previously. Most people in America would call this pedophilla and i would have to agree. I concluded by the end of the movie he did not have her best interest at heart but wanted to have a wife he knew he could control and would absolutely be a virgin. This idea can be drawn by his use of bow and arrow on the men who visited the fishing boat to fish if they even looked cross-eyed at the girl.

The girl herself seems clueless as to the fact he actually wants to marry her, until he starts bringing home wedding garb such as: Gowns, Hats, Shoes, and other accessories. He places them in an ornate looking cabinet in the room they share. They use bunk beds. Apparently there is no sexual activity as he counts down the days till their wedding on the calendar.

At this point ,a fishing party comes aboard and the young man in that group takes a liking to this girl. The old man notices but does nothing. The young man gave the girl a music device which later the old man smashes. The girl becomes curious and opens the cupboard that the old man has been keeping the wedding gear in. Now she realizes she will be on that boat forever with this old man and starts to think about the young man and the world outside.

The young man eventually returns. He confronts the old man with a flyer which contains photos of the girl as a child and tells him that parents exist who are looking for her. He also states that it is wrong for the old man to keep her on the boat isolated like he has been doing.

Finally, the girl agrees to go and with some struggle they take the smaller boat. The catch is, the old man the night before tied a rope on the boat. He then puts a noose around his neck as they leave. The boat moves on and the noose gets tighter and tighter, but the girl notices and cuts it just in time. Turning around, the young couple goes back to see the state of the old man. At this point, she decides to stay and marry the old man weather out of pity or fear who knows. There is a ceremony involving chickens. When this rite is over the young girl and old man leave in the small boat to conclude the day. The old man plays a mournful song on the erhu. I think the old man was guilt riddled and proceeds to kill himself by drowning. The small craft drifts back to the young man and some strange things take place with the girl (lets say in the supernatural realm). I will leave you to see this in the movie. I actually think it is what makes you go away with a disturbed feeling from the movie.

The reason I utilize young man, young girl and old man is because names were never really given to the characters. Once again I am posting on the fly so excuse the crudeness of my verse and diction. One last note that goes with the disturbing feeling in this movie. The old man gives fortune telling along with fishing expeditions. The girl agreeably goes down the side of the larger vessel and takes a seat on a swing in front of a painted Buddha. From the smaller fishing boat the old man fires sharpened arrows into the picture of the Buddha as she swings to and fro. She then pulls the arrows out of the boat and whispers to the old man the fortune of the person who asked.

Overall it is a good movie. The fact that all can be conveyed by virtually no linguistic interaction gets my vote for a great directorial edition. I advise people to see this if they are willing to be a little disturbed at the end and have an open mind. Following this article are cuts from the movie. Please enjoy and watch the entire film on Netflix instant view. Thank you and till next time may Buddha bless you.DragonLordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02079119639929546435noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3622224148393321211.post-91260793329988607892010-12-13T05:32:00.001-08:002010-12-13T05:32:43.095-08:00cut of ending scene of BowDragonLordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02079119639929546435noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3622224148393321211.post-61906190153083321812010-12-13T05:32:00.000-08:002010-12-13T05:32:17.874-08:00Scene from The Bow by Kim Ki-DukDragonLordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02079119639929546435noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3622224148393321211.post-59249881067974656032010-12-13T05:31:00.000-08:002010-12-13T05:31:38.526-08:00The Bow (Kim Ki-duk, 2005)DragonLordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02079119639929546435noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3622224148393321211.post-15378432779926776032010-12-13T05:30:00.000-08:002010-12-13T05:30:24.411-08:00Hwal - The Bow (2005) 활 (Trailer)DragonLordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02079119639929546435noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3622224148393321211.post-87930005768303267692010-10-06T14:46:00.000-07:002010-10-06T15:02:22.743-07:00Inspiration comes from strange places. Who would have thought that inspiration would have come from an American film. Furthermore, who would have foreseen it would be Julia Childs.

I have just watched Julie&Julia. So much for me being a critic of American film. I was wrong wrong wrong on a personal level about this work. I perceived that this would be a rather lame film, but turned out to be a turning point for HongKongPhooeyandallThingsScrewy. Julie as a person who seems much like me. Works at a job that dosn't quite fit. She can't kill a lobster, and for those of you who know me personaly you know why I find that even more kismet. Finds enjoyment in bogging about her perceived idol Julia Childs. I greatly enjoyed Julia Childs on educational television when I was young, but I digress. Julie is much like me because I have people, in my mind, who are assumed to be perfect. Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Jet Li and the like. Julie works her way through Julia's cookbook The Mastery Of French Cooking. After 548 recipies or whatever the number she comes to self-revelations that end up in meltdowns and other emotional outbursts. In the end Julie receives the accolades that she deserves when her phone is overwhelmed with calls from publishers, but one disheartening call from a publisher who says that Julia is less than thrilled with Julie.

This is where it all makes rational sense to me. One may have idols, and you think they can do no wrong, that is just how they are in your head. Being an idol dosn't make it so. One only has to keep it that way in their head if this is how they wish to perceive them. I'm an older person now and can not perform martial arts anymore and that is quite depressing. My love of it and the movies depicting it has not diminished. Rather than waste time wishing for something that cannot be...do something you can.

As I spin this blog futher I will always remember this movie to motivate me. I'm not doing this blog for Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Bey Logan or any of the other people in Martial Arts I admire. They already know and have done what I'm relaying to all of you. Each time I get behind the keyboard of my Toshibas I actually am trying to convey knowlege of Kung Fu Films, The Martial Arts World, Chinese literature and any other "screwy" things I can dispense. Facebook is another outlet for those things as a filler for my humble blog. The last thing there was a Japanese Funk Band named Osaka Monorail, a James Brown style type of music. These are the things I hope to keep offering in the future and want you all to enjoy. The key message is that the reader is the most important person to blog to. If by some chance your idol sees and enjoys it an lets you know so much the better but it isn't necessary.

Thank you for reading this little ditty, but that movie out of nowhere put me back into perspective. I even have a sign off quote now, as Julie and Julia Childs did "Bon Appitite". For me it will from now on be ,"May Buddha Bless You"....as everyone knows is what the monks say just before they are going to kick your ass.DragonLordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02079119639929546435noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3622224148393321211.post-64224254916339886252010-09-29T13:31:00.001-07:002010-09-29T13:31:31.348-07:00The Fist fighting group stuntreel 2004/2005This is like the best reel of stunts I have seen in quiet a while from real people.
